Title: Antimicrobial periodontal therapy
Conventional periodontal treatment includes subgingival instrumentation (SI) to remove biofilm and tartar from affected root surfaces. To improve the clinical and microbiological results of nonsurgical mechanical periodontal therapy, the adjunctive use of antimicrobials is indicated in the treatment of moderate to severe periodontitis. Adjuvant antimicrobial therapy can be administered either systemically or topically.
